The Backyard Homestead

Whether you want to start small (Did you know that just one self-watering container can yield 15 pounds of tomatoes?) or you’re ready for the whole shebang (chickens, vegetable and herb gardens, a fruit grove, a beehive and a goat!), this country-wise book shows you the best ways to grow your own organic produce and raise your own animals—then cook, preserve, cure, brew or pickle the fruits of your labor. With all the super-useful instructions and diagrams in The Backyard Homestead and Carleen Madigan’s great advice, you can sprout and gather seeds; make sauerkraut, yogurt, wine or jerky; milk a cow; forage food from the wild…that’s the tiniest sampling of what you’ll learn. Self-sufficiency has never been this much fun!

Great gift...

I bought the book with my son in mind. Moving recently back to the country farm house where he was raised, I thought it to be a very useful resource book for him and his young family. But I have yet to let it go. As I also have acreage I am using it too. I may have to buy another for him. I am learning from this constantly. I love it !

Great reference guide
October 04, 2009

My husband and I just bought our first home in May 2009, and I am looking forward to starting a garden. I grew up watching my mother and grandmother can their own fruits and vegetables, and my grandmother makes jellies and wine. This book has so much more information though from breeds of animals, cheese making, butter, jerky, bread, canning, and really more than I can list here. I was happy to see suggestions of how to set up your own backyard homestead based on different amounts of land. I know I will probably want to eventually buy something with a little bit more space because I want to have more animals and our neighbors are close, but I can fit a lot into the space that I do have here. I recommend this book to anybody who is interested in any type of self-sufficiency, it has a little of everything!

Exactly what I've been looking for!!

I will be purchasing my first property soon and thought I would have to have at least 5 acres in the country to become self-sufficient. Boy was I wrong! This book is absolutely jam packed with great information. I just got it today and couldn't put it down! The book is packed with valuable information. It contains things that I watched my grandmother do but never took the time to "learn" from her. Now, all is not lost. This is the book I've been searching for. It contains everything that I need to begin a small farm and then work my way up from there. The illustrations are very nice and the many recipes and instructions for making jams, jellies, cheeses, butter, etc., are great. I love it and would and will recommend it to anyone I know who is interested in small farming. I can't sing the book's praises enough. This book truly has it all for a beginner!
