When I looked at houses prior to buying this one, my first owned home, I would look as carefully as possible behind doors, paneling, against repainted window frames. I was searching for the apple green color that I associate with kitchens of the early 20th century. Like Harry Truman's Independence, Missouri home, it seems that every one got a good deal on that apple green paint - and dutifully painted over it. I long for the tiny, efficient kitchen that my Aunt Mary had in 1960's Memphis, or the farm kitchens that my mother had when I was growing up. A stove with a metal shelf on top to hold salt & pepper, metal cabinets, a stand alone hoover cabinet and the sort of haphazard work surfaces and appliance placement that expresses how the kitchen space evolved from back porch or plain unplanned room into a marvel of slow food prep nirvana.
So this book had me with the green title block on the cover. I already have some of the basic elements - the paint in my current kitchen is that delicious shade of green, and as my blank slate gradually takes on the gallery layout I have turned to this book often. The photographs I reference express immediately what I am seeking while I scavenge and search through used appliance stores, flea markets, and home stores for the right elements. I expected this to be a quick flip-through then pass along book - but I'm keeping it.
