Day trip or vacation, people have always been drawn to the seaside to reinvigorate themselves. Why leave its cool, calm and soothing elements behind when you can build them into the home you have, whether it's within reach of the sea breeze or not. A coastal modern home is, as designer-to-the-stars Tim Clarke says, "a break from the stresses of fast-paced lifestyles in an oasis that fosters togetherness and warmth." Here, he brings you inside spaces he's created to help you capture the essence of coastal living in your own home, whether you prefer the beauty of the Southern Californian coastline, the elegance of the Mediterranean, the classic charms of New England, or the exoticness of far-flung locales. Color photos.

These are gorgeous homes, yes, I'm envious! But Tim Clarke is very clear about how to make the coastal modern look achievable. "Colors, like the furnishings, fixtures, and materials, should be of the 'barely there' variety." I get it and can do that with my own stuff (he does show an Ikea bureau in here!). And sometimes I just want a book that takes me into a beautiful aesthetic that I know I'll never live in, but it's as good as a vacation to lose myself in its pages.

I was very disappointed in this book. I knew it was going to be a coffee table book- which implied lots of large photos with little text. What I didn't realize was that it was going to be VERY Modern, and very LITTLE Coastal. The author takes very expensive modern furniture and puts it in a coastal setting. I returned the book so I can't cite exact instances but I'll do my best to speak typically. Example: put a 5 piece very modern sofa on a patio on the beach in the Hamptons. The 5 piece sofa set is the Modern. The Hamptons setting is the Coastal. very stark. Maybe a few shells on a window sill or a side table. That doesn't make a book about "Coastal Modern" unless you're trying to decide which $10,000 sofa will look best in your spartan oceanfront villa. Everything is the book is very sterile looking, with a few organic items (shells) here and there. I guess "decorator-to-the-stars" is a good hint to the book's contents. If you're a typical homeowner looking for decorating ideas for your lake or coastal home, this isn't it. Sorry, TIm! (PS I hope I didn't submit this more than once. I had a few issues with Preview and Submit)
